Mikhail Nesterov is rightfully considered one of the best masters of landscape painting. Nature attracted him in its most diverse manifestations. Especially native, Russian nature. Many paintings were painted by him in his native Ufa and sang the northern beauty. Nesterov’s landscapes are filled with philosophical reflections on the meaning of life and personal experiences of the artist.

From 1905 until 1914, Mikhail Nesterov painted several paintings under the general theme of the Aksakovs' Homeland. Interestingly, during this period, he portrayed people a lot against the backdrop of an amazing landscape, because he associated man and nature as something one, whole. So the painting by Rodin Aksakov painted by him in 1914 is more likely to be knocked out of this trend. The artist writes several versions of the canvas - on the original, sketch houses on the slope are depicted, and in the subsequent - the signs of the person's presence disappear.

At the first sketch, known as the “Devil's Settlement” written at the very beginning of the Time of Troubles, it is clear that the artist sings with clear strokes the sullen mountain that has seen everything in the world and flowing at its foot at the foot of a fast easy river, and beyond the river you can see the world of endless fields. In a picture painted later, in 1906, a figure of a walking pensive woman in an old dress appears. The mountain and the river turn into theatrical scenes, and the figure becomes the central one, the mental state of which enhances the landscape effect. In one of the last versions, written in 1913, a woman is replaced by an image of a schema-monk, adding a religious and symbolic meaning to the picture.
