All the works of Konstantin Somov are very vibrant, reflect the spirit of the era, and at the same time are equipped with inherent sadness with a touch of skepticism, are melancholic. So characterized the work of Somov, one of his closest friends, Alexander Benois.
At the beginning of the 20th century, and more precisely in the period from 1900 to 1902, this reality in the view of Somov was embodied in the picture Evening. Before us come to life ladies and gentlemen, perhaps masquerade participants. They are sophisticated, but at the same time deep eroticism, intimacy of their poses.
The painting is fully stylistically thought out, all the details are selected according to some very harmonious march of colors. This was consistent with the style that Somov chose for his life - sophistication and elegance, bordering on a riot of deep feelings. The style of the 18th century is slowing down here - the sky is static, the sculptures in the park are dumb witnesses of the action, the arcades are repeated, the bosquets alternate and move into the distance, the characters take some ritual movements.
Contemporaries took the Evening as a detachment from reality, a contrast. The ostentatious naivete of the past era, which has not even set foot on the rails, and all the more so far from conquering the heavenly surface, how it can master nature, tackle its seduction.
Somov's painting, of course, combines a retrospective and even nostalgic analysis of the past generation, but not without its imagination, fiction, and absurdity of everything that happens. The game, completely devoid of life, envelops the viewer, immerses him in an atmosphere of mystical and even automatic eroticism.
