Since 1910, S. Vinogradov, like his like-minded people from the Union of Russian Artists, was seriously carried away by the theme of old estates of the Russian Empire. The new trend gave rise to an extensive series of paintings, elegiac and imbued with lyricism. Spacious interiors of suburban estates, blooming gardens flooded with sunlight - all this inspired and fascinated Vinogradov.
The artist had a close companion and at the same time comrade in painting - Alexei Stepanov, who had a daughter - a girl Catherine. They often met together at the Golovinka estate. In this place with poetic nature and beautiful manicured summer residences, the artist Vinogradov works on a gallery of the same type of paintings, which he briefly calls: “In the house”. Masters are interested in the interior of the rooms, the measured life of people away from the city and the wildlife blooming outside the windows.
On the canvases often flashes a little girl with pigtails. This is the very daughter of a friend of the artist - Katya Stepanova.
Vinogradov writes it during various classes: at the dining table, on the veranda, at embroidery and drawing. In the painting “Playing” in 1914, Katya is sitting at the piano. In addition to the figure of the girl, the painter included in the plot the figure of a dog, which settled down on a chair side by side.
He paid much attention to the description of the decoration of the house. Yellow striped wallpaper, correctly placed chairs, an icon in the corner, a large picture, books on the shelves. A closed window is decorated with an openwork curtain.
The space is flooded with soft light. The fresh green of the trees outside the window is reflected on the mirror surface of the black piano. This fusion of the landscape on the street and the interior looks harmonious and cheerful.
The canvas "Playing" is written in wide, long and swift strokes. You look at the canvas and feel the mood of the girl, a young pianist. Relaxed play, rest, peace and quiet reign in the soul from watching the work, which is now in the art museum of Belarus.
