Before leaving in 1890, the artist Julius Clover managed to write the Russian “Winter Sunset”, which later became famous in many countries.

The picture of 1889 is presented in a series of similar landscapes: a detailed forest and stream in the near future, cloudy outlines of trees and a sunspot in the far.

The whole canvas seems to be simple and clear, as if inspired by tremendous power. The distant sun, hiding behind tall trunks and branches, touches its entire rays with its rays - the earth, whitewashed by frost, the icy surface of the water hanging under the weight of snow crowns - and revives it, warming with golden and crimson glare.

"Winter sunset" is striking in its authenticity. Behind a stream with slightly melted ice, we see an old tree uprooted. Around it are perennial huge spruces, diluted with several lonely small trees. No artificiality and deliberately beautiful lies. The true nature of Clover is inspiring, amazingly beautiful, peaceful and comfortable.

White paint of snow harmoniously merges with the yellowness of sunset. Snow-covered spruces go into the distance, disappearing in a dense grayish haze. A piece of sky, glowing, transparent, is decorated with small cotton clouds. Around the incandescent solar disk, a celestial fire burns: lace of fire-colored clouds hung in space.

Julius Clover admitted that he had best studied sunsets in nature. He knows all the diversity of the sunset day palette. The canvases of a great forest connoisseur call for silent and enthusiastic contemplation; they are romantic and poetic. Russian open spaces won the heart of the master, and the audience sees life-affirming, eternal, having their own soul.

Today, the beautiful canvas "Winter Sunset" can be admired in the Irkutsk Museum of Art.
